As we step into a new year, Equality Reporters extends heartfelt gratitude to all our supporters, partners, and readers who have championed the cause of disability rights with us over the past year. Your unwavering commitment has fueled our work as Nigeria’s foremost platform for disability and policy reporting. Together, we’ve amplified voices, inspired change, and held leaders accountable.
However, as we inch closer to 2030—the deadline for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)—the urgency for action cannot be overstated. Nigeria is yet to meet critical disability inclusion targets, and time is running out. We must collectively ensure that Nigerians with disabilities are no longer sidelined in the nation’s development agenda.
This year, we urge policymakers at all levels to break free from outdated perceptions of disability as a matter of charity or pity. Such approaches perpetuate exclusion and dependency. Instead, let us recognize persons with disabilities as active, capable individuals with unique contributions to make in building a stronger Nigeria. Inclusion must mean intentionality:
In policymaking: Nigerians with disabilities must be involved at the decision-making table, shaping policies that directly impact their lives.
In governance: Systems must be designed to eliminate barriers to their full participation in education, employment, healthcare, and other opportunities.
In society: Public and private institutions must create environments where equality and accessibility are prioritised.
The cost of inaction is steep—not only for persons with disabilities but for Nigeria as a whole. Without meaningful inclusion, the country risks missing the transformative potential of millions of its citizens and falling short of global development commitments.
As we embark on this journey into 2025, Equality Reporters remains steadfast in advocating for a Nigeria where inclusion, participation, and equal opportunities are realities for all. But we cannot do it alone. We call on policymakers, civil society, private organizations, and individuals to join this vital cause.
Let this be the year we shift the narrative, dismantle systemic barriers, and unleash the full potential of all Nigerians. The time to act is now.
